I learned how to use Canva during the PTIP Program - Joy

Teachers of Schoolinka shares the success stories of teachers who have taken our transformative programs. Today, we met Sunny Joy Ene, a Coding and Robotics teacher based in Lagos. She shared her journey from being a lesson teacher to a class teacher and now a robotics teacher where she equips her pupils with various tech skills. She also shared how the Professional Teachers Incubation Program equipped her to be a better teacher. 

Hello, what's your name and what class and subject do you teach?

My name is Sunny Joy. I am not a classroom teacher, so I teach primary school pupils of different classes coding and robotics. I have about 8 years of experience, I used to be a class teacher then I would teach all subjects. But now, I have transitioned to teaching tech in the classroom.

How did you start teaching?

I have always loved teaching. As far back as my SS3 days, I remember being a lesson teacher then. I realised that I was really good at it and the children loved me and I loved them too. I realised that teaching was one way I get to spend more time with children so I decided to pursue a career in teaching.

What do you love most about teaching?

Being with the kids.

Let’s talk about your professional development. How did you hear about Schoolinka?

I heard about Schoolinka from my boss. He enrolled me in a teacher training program and that was how I heard about Schoolinka.

How has Schoolinka helped you to become a better teacher?

I did the PTIP program and there was a course on understanding learners behaviour that took my skills to the next level. There were some things I already knew but I got a better picture and understanding on how to relate with kids with different learning abilities. Also the course on AI where I learned how to use ChatGPT and other tools.  

I remember the last course on microteaching, I was very scared to use Canva and we were asked to use it to create a lesson. I thought I couldn’t do it but I did and now I have started using it in my class. It has made the experience seamless. I also learned how to use icebreakers in class and this has helped my kids to relate more and bond more.

What are your favourite courses on the Schoolinka Website?

It will be the course on Understanding Learners Behaviour, it helped me to understand how to teach kids with different learning styles.
